A. Digital Subscriber Line. It is a special high-speed technology which applies fibre optic practices to copper lines. ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) has a faster transfer speed in one direction, normally from US to YOU. SDSL (Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) has the same data transfer speed in both directions. At this time we feel DSL should be used for dedicated connections where it is available.
Q. Can I get it at home?
A. Yes. However it is more expensive than dialup connectivity. Some providers, like Bell Canada and Odynet have DSL services which are directed at the home user.
Q. Where in London is it Available?
A. Distance from downtown is critical for determining availability of DSL technology. We expect that anyone downtown can get a full bandwidth connection. We would not recommend SDSL for anyone more than 2 KM from Richmond and Dundas. ADSL and Wireless connections available almost everywhere in the city. These high-speed technologies are also available in Strathroy, St Thomas. Dorchester, Woodstock and Tillsonburg.
Q. How fast is DSL? How does it compare to ISDN and "The Wave"?
A. A full bandwidth SDSL connection is 2 Mb/s from us to you and 2 Mb/s from you to us. Full bandwidth ISDN is 128 Kb/s in both directions. What this means in simple terms is that when downloading from the Internet your maximum download speed is about 200K per second. With 128K ISDN, the maximum upload or download speed is between 15 and 17K per second. "The Wave" has a shared 500Kb/s speed from the cable company to the community network. Download speeds are a function of number of people using the community network. You can expect anywhere from 70 Kb/s right down to dialup speeds.
Q. What does this mean in practical terms?
A. The standard version of Microsoft Internet Explorer V4.1 is about 17 MBytes. With Dialup it would take about 2 Hours to download. With ISDN it would take about 30 Minutes. With ADSL it takes 6 minutes. With SDSL it takes 2 minutes.
Q. What does a DSL connection cost?
A. Our current rates are posted on Our Web Site.
Q. We already have ISDN equipment. How can you help us?
A. ISDN
was designed as a high-speed dialup technology. We use it for dedicated
connections when DSL is not practical. If you are not running any server
services at your end, why not consider using your ISDN equipment for DIAL-UP.
Our rates for ISDN are the same as our other dial-up services.
See http://www.lweb.net
for pricing details. Our One MB ADSL service is virtually
the same price as non-dedicated ISDN services. It's only limitation
is that you are limited to a single IP address.
